Do you have any beautiful pieces of Thai silk and wonder what exactly it is?
Thai Silk has been produced for centuries by indigineous people living in Northeastern Thailand. The most popular place that silk is produced is on the Khorat Plateau, about 150 miles to the northeast of Bangkok. This area is locally known as Isan. These people originally started to produce silk centuries ago for every day use for their clothing, and soon became recognized around the world for its softness and its luxurious feel!
Silk is the natural thread or fiber that is produced by the salivary glands of silkworms. After reaching the "adult" stage of its maturing, the silkworm uses an intricate set of organs within their body to spin a cocoon which they will use to mature into a moth. These cocoons are amazing because each cocoon which is about the size of a mans thumb and can create one single strand of silk that measures between 500-1,500 meters! (abut 1/3 mile to 1 mile long!)
Every piece of 100% Thai Silk is unique and cannot be duplicated. This is because true Thai Silk is hand crafted and every piece has its individual flaws and characteristics. Since each article is hand made, the consistency, length and density can be different. Not every silk worm makes the same cocoon so no two pieces can be identicle! In contrast, artificial silk is consistent, uniform and each piece is the same.
